Mpumalanga means ‘the place where the sun rises’, a name derived from lying on the eastern border of the country. It’s spectacular scenic beauty and an abundance of wildlife are what draws people to it. Bordered by Mozambique and Swaziland to the east and Gauteng province to the west, it is situated on the plateau grasslands of the Middleveld, rolling eastwards for hundreds of kilometres. In the northeast, it rises towards mountain peaks and finally plunges down the escarpment into the Lowveld with the magnificent Kruger National Park in the east. Mountains, panoramic passes, valleys, rivers, waterfalls and forests characterise the landscape.
